The Ugly Duckling

It was a beautiful summer, the wheat was yellow, the oats were green, and the hay was dry. From the old ruined house which nobody lived in, down to the edge of the canal, was a forest of great burdocks. It was under these burdocks that a duck had built herself a warm nest, and was sitting all day on six pretty eggs. Five of them were white, but the sixth, which was larger than the others, was of an ugly grey colour. The duck was always puzzled about that egg, and how it came to be so different from the rest.

She had looked at the eggs at least a hundred and fifty times, when, to her joy, she saw a tiny crack on two of them. Next morning she was rewarded by noticing cracks in the whole five eggs, and by midday two little yellow heads were poking out from the shells. This encouraged her so much that, after breaking the shells with her bill, so that the little creatures could get free of them, she sat steadily for a whole night upon the nest, and before the sun arose the five white eggs were empty.

Teori Pembentukan Bumi

Latar Belakang

Bumi adalah planet tempat tinggal seluruh makhluk hidup berserta isinya. Sebagai tempat tinggal makhluk hidup, bumi tersusun atas beberapa lapisan bumi, bahan-bahan material pembentuk bumi, dan seluruh kekeyaan alam yang terkandung di dalamnya. Bentuk permukaan bumi berbeda-beda, mulai dari daratan, lautan, pegunungan, perbukitan, lembah, danau dan sebagainya. Bumi sebagai salah satu planet tidak diam seperti apa yang kita pikirkan selama ini, melainkan bumi melakukan perputaran pada porosnya (rotasi) dan bergerak mengelilingi matahari (revolusi) sebagai pusat sistem tata surya. Hal inilah yang menyebabkan terjadinya siang dan malam dan pasang surut air laut. Oleh karena itu proses terbentuknya bumi tidak terlepas dari proses terbentuknya tata surya kita.

Teori Pembentukan Bumi

Penyelidikan pertama pada abad ke-19 berdasarkan fosil dan batuan (secara geologi), bumi terbentuk pada 4,6 milyar tahun yang lalu (4,600 jta tahun yang lalu). Seluruh tata surya kita terbentuk dalam waktu yang sama. Bumi sebagai tempat tinggal makhluk hidup dalam proses terjadinya di kaji lewat ilmu kosmografi. Berikut beberapa hipotesa/ hipotesis terjadinya bumi yaitu sebagai berikut :

A.Pengertian dan Ruang Lingkup Geografi

Geografi berasal dari bahasa yunani, yaitu geo yang berarti bumi dan graphien yang berarti lukisan atau tulisan.

Istilah geografi untuk pertama kalinya diperkenalkan oleh Erastothenes pada abad ke 1.Menurut Erastothenes geografi berasal dari kata geographica yang berarti penulisan atau

penggambaran mengenai bumi. Pengertian bumi dalam geografi tersebut, tidak hanya berkenaan dengan fisik alamiah bumi saja, melainkan juga meliputi segala gejala dan prosesnya, baik itu gejala alamnya, maupun gejala dan proses kehidupannya. Berdasarkan pendapat tersebut, maka para ahli geografi

(geograf) sependapat bahwa Erastothenes dianggap sebagai peletak dasar pengetahuan

geografi.

Pada zaman Yunani kuno pengetahuan manusia tentang bumi masih sangat dipengaruhi oleh mitologi. Namun, sejak abad ke-6 SM pengaruh mitologi itu terus berkurang seiring dengan makin berkembangnya ilmu pengetahuan sehingga pengetahuan tentang bumi mulai didasarkan atas ilmu alam, ilmu pasti, dan logika. Salah satu bukti bahwa pengetahuan telah didasarkan pada logika adalah telah adanya usaha untuk menjelaskan tentang suatu wilayah termasuk perilaku penduduknya. Orang yang pertama kali menguraikan seluk-beluk keadaan suatu tempat, yang kemudian dinamakan topografi adalah Herodutus (485-428 SM).

Pada awal abad ke-2, muncul tokoh baru yaitu Claudius Ptolomaeus dalam bukunya yang berjudul Geographike Unphegesis mengatakan bahwa

geografi adalah suatu penyajian melalui peta dari sebagian dan seluruh permukaan bumi yang menunjukan kenampakan umum. Menurut Ptolomeus geografi lebih mengutamakan hal-hal atau fenomena yang bersifat kuantitatif.

Hormon tumbuhan

Hormon tumbuhan, atau pernah dikenal juga dengan fitohormon, adalah sekumpulan senyawa organik bukan hara (nutrien), baik yang terbentuk secara alami maupun dibuat oleh manusia, yang dalam kadar sangat kecil (di bawah satu milimol per liter, bahkan dapat hanya satu mikromol per liter) mendorong, menghambat, atau mengubah pertumbuhan, perkembangan, dan pergerakan (taksis)tumbuhan^[1].

Kelompok hormon

Terdapat ratusan hormon tumbuhan atau zat pengatur tumbuh (ZPT) yang dikenal orang, baik yang endogen maupun yang eksogen. Pengelompokan dilakukan untuk memudahkan identifikasi, dan didasarkan terutama berdasarkan efek fisiologi yang sama, bukan semata kemiripan struktur kimia. Pada saat ini dikenal lima kelompok utama hormon tumbuhan, yaitu auksin (bahasa Inggris: auxins),sitokinin (cytokinins), giberelin (gibberellins, GAs), etilena (etena, ETH), dan asam absisat (abscisic acid, ABA). Tiga kelompok yang pertama bersifat positif bagi pertumbuhan pada konsentrasi fisiologis, etilena dapat mendukung maupun menghambat pertumbuhan, dan asam absisat merupakan penghambat (inhibitor) pertumbuhan. Selain kelima kelompok itu, dikenal pula kelompok-kelompok lain yang berfungsi sebagai hormon tumbuhan namun diketahui bekerja untuk beberapa kelompok tumbuhan atau merupakan hormon sintetik, seperti brasinosteroid, asam jasmonat, asam salisilat, dan poliamina. Beberapa senyawa sintetik berperan sebagai inhibitor (penghambat perkembangan).

Auksin

Ada 9 auksin indol, 14 sitokinin, 52 giberelin, tiga asam absisat, dan satu etilena yang dihasilkan secara alami dan telah diekstraksi orang^[1]. ZPT sintetik ada yang memiliki fungsi sama dengan ZPT alami, meskipun secara struktural berbeda. Dalam praktik, seringkali ZPT sintetik (buatan manusia) lebih efektif atau lebih murah bila diaplikasikan untuk kepentingan usaha tani daripada ekstraksi ZPT alami.
